Yan Tian was born and raised in Beijing, China. She spent some of her childhood immersed in the unspoiled beauty of the rural countryside in northern China. She excelled as a student and gained entrance to Tsinghua University, and later graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering. In 1986, she came to the United States for further graduate education and obtained a master’s degree in the same field in two years, followed by a successful career as a software engineer. Yan took time away from her

profession to raise her children and contemplated the direction she truly wanted her life to take. She decided to abandon her old career and pursue her passion for painting. She launched her new career in 2003 by attending workshops from nationally recognized artists, studying art books and master art works from around the world, and tirelessly painting a variety of subjects from the life.

Yan’s work has begun receiving national recognition. In 2005, her portrait painting of “Girl with Black Hair” won a Second Place Award in the Central Coast National Fine Art Competition in Morro Bay, California. For three times in later years, her works have been juried into Oil Painters of America National and Regional Shows. Among many other achievements, she earned a Certificate of Excellence Award in the 2006 International Portrait Competition hosted by the Portrait Society of America. In May 2006, she was honored with a Gold Medal Award in the Emerald Art Center National Juried Spring Exhibition in Springfield, Oregon.

She has painted commissioned portraits, and her works have been collected by artists and collectors throughout the nation.
